Lovely testimony from the author of Managing MIL: You and your Mother-in-Law – for better, or for worse? Katy Rink

Managing MIL: You and your Mother-in-Law – for better, or for worse? Essential reading for Daughters-in-Law
“I was absolutely blown away by what Siobhan and her team at Connor PR achieved for my book – Managing MIL. With a background in journalism and some good contacts myself, I thought I could handle my own publicity – how wrong I was. The difference between the few ‘hits’ that I was able to achieve, going solo and the absolute storm of publicity that Siobhan managed to unleash was nothing short of a miracle. My book is to feature in nearly every national newspaper – not only as a mentions or small reviews but as big, double-page feature articles, Q&As, first person pieces from me as author. Siobhan grasped the concept immediately and knew exactly the right people to speak to. She produced a tailor-made campaign, in different phases (press, radio, tv) which she continually updated, chasing new leads all the time. I would sing her praises with my last breath!”

Managing MIL: You and your Mother-in-Law – for better, or for worse?
Essential reading for Daughters-in-Law
from Katy Rink, Peridot Press
Does your mother-in-law drive you to distraction? Are you a desperate daughter-in-law? Who is to blame? It’s hard to know when you’re stuck on the inside.
Journalist Katy Rink looks at the best and worst of this frequently tricky relationship and provides smart advice for keeping your cool, your sanity and your family intact.
How do you survive a weekend with the in-laws? Should you ever go on holiday together? How do you manage a new baby and MIL? What are the dangers of accepting that friend request on Facebook? These are just some of the tricky topics tackled.
The author calls upon the experiences of fellow daughters-in-law in her home town – at secretive get-togethers that came to be known as DIL Club – to illustrate the highs and lows of dealing with his mother.
There are plenty of anecdotes to amuse and entertain, including the DILs who received engine oil, chin hair removal cream and paper knickers as Christmas presents from their MILs; the MIL who provided itemised receipts for ice creams and charged for petrol; and the MIL who greeted news of a pregnancy with “I can’t believe you haven’t had her sterilised yet”.
You can also try and recognise your MIL from a cast of hilarious caricatures including The Apologist, The Snob, The Manipulator and The Social Climber.
But amid the horror stories there are heart-warming tales of when (and how) it all goes right, and when peace breaks out. There is also top advice from leading relationship experts.
This is the book that every daughter-in-law should read. And more than a few mothers-in-law will want to have a nose, too.
Managing MIL will be released by Peridot Press on November 18th

About the author Katy Rink
Katy Rink is a national freelance journalist contributing to Telegraph Women, Parenting and Education and Guardian Life & Style.
She came up with the idea for Managing MIL based on a decade of innings with her own, characterful mother-in-law – but was also very interested to know how other women managed this infamously tricky relationship.
“I wanted to know why, when two women essentially want the same thing (the happiness of the son and grandchildren), do they so often find themselves at odds?” Katy said “I was interested to know what other daughters-in-law think; is any relationships really so bad that we should cut MIL off? Is it ever okay to stop trying?
“Is it always best to communicate the way we are feeling, or should we put a brave face on it and sweep all sentiment under the carpet?”
The resulting book is based on interviews with daughters-in-law at secret ‘DIL Clubs’.
“All I had to do was say the magic words ‘mother-in-law’ and retreat into the corner and start scribbling,” said Katy.
Katy graduated from Oxford University in 1998 and worked as a local newspaper journalist, before taking a career break to have her children. She completed an MA in Creative Writing and a law conversion with distinction whilst her boys were still little, briefly considering life as a family barrister – but is now writing again, as a freelance journalist and author.

Connor PR working with Middlechild and GroupM Entertainment production on a new programme for Channel 5 ‘ The Dog Rescuers’
The Dog Rescuers
Coming soon to Channel 5, “The Dog Rescuers” a Middlechild and GroupM Entertainment production that follows the canine rescue work of the RSPCA across England and Wales.
With over 1.3 million reports of cruelty and mistreatment of animals made to the RSPCA every year, the charity is under increasing pressure to safeguard our nation’s pets from the constant threat of abusive owners and unscrupulous breeders. This series follows those inspectors and officers that deal with ensuring man’s best friend is being properly treated. Using the latest forensic technologies and good old fashioned leg work, the series follows the RSPCA inspectors as they track down and rescue some of the 150,000 animals which are abused and mistreated in the UK every year, and witnesses the struggle to rehabilitate the victimised animals and to prosecute the offenders.
Channel 5 gained access to a selected group of the RSPCA’s 350 inspectors across the country for four months, and our cameras followed inspectors investigating crimes of abuse against dogs and puppies in rural areas and inner cities, as poor living conditions, malnutrition, illegal mass-breeding, organised fights are eradicated all in the aid of saving dogs’ lives.
Despite the sometimes horrific findings, the 10 x 30’ series has positivity at its heart as it will also follow some of the RSPCA’s success stories as they seek to rehabilitate and eventually rehouse some of the 12,000 dogs which the charity rehomes every year.
David Sumnall, Series Producer commented: “We are a nation of dog lovers but over 50% of RSPCA’s prosecutions last year were for cases involving abuse to dogs, so I think this is a really important series. We’ve been able to highlight the plight of these animals and show the incredible work that is being done to rescue and rehome them. It has been tough to witness the neglect at times but to be there as the dogs and puppies are saved and to see them with their new families has made it all worth it.”
Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor, Entertainment, Daytime & Soaps said: “This series will have a tremendous impact on all those that watch. Some of the circumstances and conditions in which the RSPCA inspectors find dogs is unbelievably horrible. We’re trying to get as many dogs rehoused in loving homes as possible across the series run, putting the heart back into having a family pet and thereby giving four legged friends in need a second chance”
Alan Laxton, RSPCA Broadcast Executive:
The RSPCA rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes thousands of dogs a year across England and Wales. It’s great that The Dog Rescuers gives audiences the chance to see the dedication, hard work and passion all RSPCA staff have for making the lives of these dogs better. Some of the stories can be shocking, but The Dog Rescuers also shows the heart warming, happy endings that the RSPCA strives to give to every dog that comes into our care.
Connor PR working with child protection expert Mark William-Thomas on Exposure: ‘Predators Abroad’
EXPOSURE ‘PREDATORS ABROAD’
Wednesday 2nd October, ITV, 22.35pm
One year after exposing the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal, child protection expert Mark Williams-Thomas has gone undercover in a new documentary, Exposure: Predators Abroad, in a bid to unveil British child sex offenders who are travelling abroad to prey on vulnerable youngsters.
Mark Williams-Thomas is available for comment and interview.
Around the world an estimated 2 million children are exploited in the sex industry.
Among the offenders are British paedophiles – but no one knows how many. In 2008 authorities in the UK vowed to get tough with these travelling child sex offenders.
But five years later Exposure reveals Britain is struggling to crackdown on child sex tourism. Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas travels to Cambodia for his first major investigation following last year’s multi award-winning Exposure programme, ‘The Other Side of Jimmy Savile’.
Williams-Thomas goes undercover in Phnom Penh to expose the sickening trade in children for sex. Posing as a British child sex tourist, he meets men who want to supply two girls for $800 – just over £500. The girls are just 9 and 10.
Williams-Thomas also investigates the so-called ‘new sex tourism’, which involves paedophiles accessing children by way of teaching, setting up orphanages and volunteer work.
The programme features contributions from experts in the field, including Bharti Patel from the charity End Child Prostitution, Pornography and Trafficking or ECPAT.
She tells the programme: “Prosecution of child sex offenders abroad is dismally low in this country and that is probably the most worrying thing and it also sends out the signal that British sex offenders can get away with committing this and not be prosecuted. So more needs to be done.”
The programme was made with the help of Action Pour Les Enfants, an organisation that carries out surveillance operations on suspected paedophiles in Cambodia and helps police secure prosecutions. Shocking footage, never broadcast before, shows British paedophiles with their young victims.
Cambodian police are currently involved in an ongoing operation as a result of information supplied by this programme.

TOP BRITISH YOUTUBE CELEBRITY SHAVES HEAD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DYSLEXIA HELP
TOP BRITISH YOUTUBE CELEBRITY SHAVES HEADTO RAISE FUNDS FOR DYSLEXIA HELP
On 19 July 2013, dyslexic singer, artist and make-up artist Klaire de Lys announced on her Youtube channel that she would shave her head if £5000 was raised in bursaries for people with dyslexia and on a limited income to access the Davis Dyslexia Programme.
£5035 later, Klaire fulfilled her pledge and shaved her head on 6 August 2013. An account and a short video of the event can be viewed at http://www.klairedelys.com/2013/08/09/i-shaved-my-head/
22-year-old Klaire, who lives in Reading, Berkshire, founded KlairedelysArt in January 2009, a YouTube Channel devoted to artistic make-up tutorials. To date, the channel has accumulated over 380,000 subscribers. There have been over 86,000,000 views of the videos on the channel. Klaire was featured in a recent article in the Observer, “YouTube UK: 20 of Britain’s most popular online video bloggers”.
After years of going undiagnosed, Klaire underwent a Davis Dyslexia Programme to address her personal challenges with dyslexia. “To say that that experience made a difference is a serious understatement,” says Klaire. “It changed my life completely and gave me the tools to achieve things I could only dream of before.” Klaire has published (in print, and as a video recording) a more detailed account of her experience of dyslexia and the Davis programme at http://www.klairedelys.com/2013/07/19/my-dyslexia-story/ The video version has been viewed 54,468 times.
The Davis Dyslexia Programme was created by Ronald Davis, author of the internationally best-selling book, “The Gift of Dyslexia”. The programme originated out of Davis’ own experience of severe dyslexia and is now provided in over 30 languages and in more than 45 countries. It plays to the perceptual talents inherent in dyslexia and makes innovative use of plasticine clay as a learning medium.
“At present, the Davis Programme receives no state funding,” says Richard Whitehead, Director of Davis Learning Foundation, the non-profit UK arm of Davis Dyslexia Association International. “We are delighted with Klaire’s amazing gesture, which will bring the benefits of the programme to people who could never have dreamt of them before.”
A few days prior to shaving her head, Klaire launched her new band, Fenix, with a song called “Paper Wings” which she wrote about her experiences with dyslexia. In the eight days since the song was launched on 3 August, it has been viewed over 20,000 times. The link to the song is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8-RnzXJmTs
“I’m hoping that by approaching this project by both shaving my head to raise awareness, and releasing my song Paper Wings, I can really make a difference in the lives of Dyslexics,” says Klaire. “Not only raising funds to help, but also by hopefully creating a song which will continue to raise awareness long after my hair has grown back.”
People with dyslexia will not be the only people to benefit from Klaire’s gesture. Klaire plans to donate her hair to Wigs for Kids, a non-profit company providing hair replacement for children who have lost their hair because of cancer treatment, burns and other medical issues.

Siobhan Connor MD Of Connor PR worked with Mick Fleetwood for two years
Really great interview in today’s Sunday Times Magazine with Mick Fleetwood, ‘Excess all areas’ by Matt Munday. I worked directly with Mick in 1999, was a big fan of his sister, the actress Susan Fleetwood who sadly passed away in 1995.
Mick Fleetwood has survived nearly 50 years in rock’s most dysfunctional band, Fleetwood Mac. Now they’re back on the road
Mick Fleetwood on Fleetwood Mac: ‘We’re totally driven by drama’
Fleetwood insists the band members love each other really but ‘just push the wrong buttons’
Mick Fleetwood has admitted that Fleetwood Mac are still “totally driven by drama”, likening it to an “addiction”.
Four members of the band’s classic ‘Rumours’-era lineup – Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks – reunited this April (2013) for an extensive world tour that will include six arena shows in the UK in September and October.
“We’re totally driven by drama,” Fleetwood said in a new interview with The Sunday Times. “I think we’re calming down a bit, but we’re terrified of not feeling. So if nothing’s happening you’ll worry yourself into creating a drama – just so you’ve got something to react to. It’s sort of an addiction, really.”
However, Fleetwood’s bandmate Stevie Nicks revealed that she and former lover Lindsey Buckingham managed to bury the hatchet shortly before the band began their reunion tour. “I said to Lindsey, ‘We have got to change this. We cannot be enemies for one more day’,” she recalled. “Because you never know – things happen. You don’t know if you’ll ever tour again. So we have to walk on stage hand in hand, and we have to mean it.”
Meanwhile, Fleetwood took the opportunity to quash the common misconception that the four members of the band don’t really get along. “This might sound really corny, but the biggest rumour about Fleetwood Mac is that we don’t really like each other,” he explained. “I understand why people would think that, after everything we’ve said and done. But the reality is, we love each other. We just push the wrong buttons.”
Fleetwood Mac will play three dates at London’s O2 Arena on September 24, 25 and 27 before taking to the stage at Birmingham’s LG Arena on September 29, Manchester Arena on October 1 and Glasgow’s The Hydro on October 3.
